The Vickers hardness tester is a precision measuring instrument widely used in materials science, metal processing, quality control, and scientific research. Its primary purpose is to assess the hardness characteristics of a material by measuring its resistance to indentation.

 

Hardness is one of the important indicators of a material's mechanical properties. It directly reflects a material's ability to resist plastic deformation under stress, and is crucial for material selection, processing technology formulation, and product quality control.

 

The Vickers hardness tester works based on the indentation method. An indenter with a specific geometry (usually a diamond pyramidal indenter) is pressed into the material surface under a specified test force. After holding the indenter for a certain period, the test force is removed, and the hardness value is calculated by measuring the diagonal length of the indentation. This method is applicable to a wide range of materials, from extremely soft to extremely hard, including metals, alloys, ceramics, plastics, and composite materials.
